In dedication to Tahlequah the grieving Mother Orca, and to bring awareness to the animals of our largest bodies of water. A mother’s love and her bond to her baby is unbreakable. Tahlequah opened the world’s eyes, showing us how capable the Creator is. S/he gave all creation the gift of emotions. The gift of choice. Tahlequah chose to carry her baby for days and days after death. In the process, the other orcas in her pod supported her, relievd her, taking turns carrying the dead baby so the mother orca could rest and eat. This skirt was made in tribute to Tahlequah, her enduring strength and love for her baby makes us want to work harder to preserve Mother Earth (Aki). The salmon is vital to the survival to many Nations. Our planet is grieving just as Tahlequah grieves. The skirt is also a symbol to all women and our relations to one another. Like the orcas in their pod, we support, encourage, and teach one another. As women we are responsible to take care of water. We are ALL responsible to care for the water. Also this skirt is a tribute to all those grieving the loss of a loved one. Let’s all be responsible for our own duties to this beautiful planet we call home and our place in creation.
